2011 Anyksciai Tree-top walk Competition

Location:Anyksciai, Lithuania

Type:Competition

Status:3'rd Prize winner

Programme:Recreation

Collaborated with:V. Gailiūtė

Year:2011

Project site has an enormous cultural significance for Lithuanians, as it was vividly depicted in a poem by A. Baranauskas. Consequently any intervention close to it sparks a myriad of discussions if this is the right spot for such a structure, that it can ruin the uniqueness of this particular space. On the other hand it is also a magic spot for such a project as it can by a key to its success. The population has a point though; therefore the Anyksciai tree-top-walk has certain goals to meet, namely: enrich the sensitive context, accessibility for all (incl. physically challenged), development of sustainable tourism, better quality, also practical things, such as maintainace & exploitation during harsh winters, economy & durability.

We see the tree-top walk as a “road” where each segment is more inspiring & impressive that a previous one. The endpoint and highlight is the “Puntukas” stone/monument.
The road consists of five sections. It starts at information center, with a café, ticket office, tiny museum & a classroom. It goes further with the first jump in the tree crowns, followed by fun triangle, with facilities for adrenaline-freaks. Fourth section is an impressive tree-top passage towards the tower over the tree crowns. Climbing to the tower top is a rewarding experience. Small stops & viewpoints make it pleasurable as well. Forest hike towards Puntukas lets people appreciate the beauty of forest.

The pre-set goals translate in the design solutions. Colors let to blend in, construction is simple and prevents damage to the existing trees, 100% handicapped accessible, and finally cherishes already unique character of place.

2010 Lukiskiu Parkas Competition

Location:Vilnius. Lithuania

Type:Competition

Programme:Public Space, Recreation, Representation

Collaborated with:T. Jonauskis, J.Muliuolytė

Year:2010

Stigmatization and clear dichotomy of today's values is clearly visible in this public space. Twenty years of debate, and four failed competitions suggests that this square is of extreme importance not only for Vilnius dwellers, but to an entire nation as well. There are multiple reasons for why this space is in a need to change. Firstly, everyone recognizes the fact that existing network of paths was designed to focus all attention onto the centre of the square where the statue of Lenin used to stand up until 1990. After statues removal, this square was supposed to become the main spot for states representation, commemoration of those who died from repressions & accompanied with recreation programme of city's residents.

There were numerous grand proposals on how the square could have been renovated; on the other hand, none of them fit the character of this city part. Most of the former attempts to change this space were either too bold or too reserved mainly focusing on grand spatial restructuring, some hyper nationalistic pattern throughout entire space or just some spatial joke, however denied the complexity of related parties and functions attached to it.

The competition entry proposes to create a space cherishing the past, current and the future, keeping all the valuable features and elements and repositioning them in a way to fit new programme.

2008 New Building for Bouwkunde BK2City Competition

Location:Delft, The Netherlands

Programme:Education

Year:2008

One might think that faculty of architecture must be an icon; other might claim the undisputable necessity to represent achievements of current era. Now it is a perfect moment to rethink all the flaws in perception and understanding what are essential features of a good architecture faculty. Answer is more than obvious; Students of course! Architectural community is in constant pursue of new spaces to work in, never shiny offices nor historical palaces, but factories, spacious lofts, abandoned superstructures and etc. instead. Therefore building itself where architectural office/ community/ school is/are located, never states for quality of education or products made there. We should stop looking for building, we should stop aiming towards excellence in architectural details and most importantly, we should never constrain ourselves to a building. As a result we argue that it is necessary to design not a 'new building for bouwkunde' but a 'new place for bouwkunde'. Magazine cover architecture, building materials, spatial implications of certain time, age fast, while city stays intact, constantly changing, improving, mutating, coping with problems/ disasters, declining, evolving but eventually sustaining itself. All in all, aim of this project is to transfer cities qualities and abilities to a 'new place for bouwkunde'.

Project consists of multiple units that are based on a grid structure which derives from a pedestrian flow study and maximized accessibility calculation. Units themselves can be divided into studio, office and public structures (that are fixed). Studios have 3 levels, first and second is place are meant for eight 12 people studios, to meet, discuss, work and relax, while roof (level 3) is used for modeling sketching. Level 3 is open and has a broad panoramic view of entire bouwkunde space. It goes without saying that, modeling equipment and workplaces for building models is an extraordinary feature in each architectural school, therefore it must be easy to access and located close by. Bloc structure has numerous advantages such as: ability to create own identity for each studio, exterior of a block can be designed separately, enabling students identify themselves with a certain place, which is like should be like home for half of a year. To work in a home-like environment, with small kitchen, couches and other equipment very much increases motivation and emotional atmosphere of a studio. It also reduces the need to protect building perimeter rather than a simple access control to studio. All year 24/7 open place of bouwkunde serves as powerful impetus to strive for perfection, not constraining anyone to leave because of building closure.
Offices are divided in to two, namely: administration and academic(staff closer to students). Public structures (library restaurant and some other facilities) are the centerpiece of action, library as a cube of books with a courtyard inside, and completely open and simply designed restaurant where openness is the main feature.

Even though there are not many examples of such concepts, but it is essential to point out that it has some positive factors. Glass roof structure should cover entire area, making concrete floor completely unnecessary reducing building costs dramatically, furthermore 'studio blocks' don't need any insulation, are easy to build, expand, reconstruct, demolish or replace. Foundation building costs are also minimized as most of buildings inside do not need it. Glass roof enables to save a lots of energy during winter, cuts expenses for maintenance of electric lighting. Further technologies might empower to produce energy making good example among self sustaining structures. All in all, the design is able expand both vertically and horizontally, evolve or deteriorate, decay and diminish, change and mute, just like city does, making it no building at all, more a place to produce those who produce buildings.
